Two retiring delegates were among legislators and lawyers honored as “Champions of Justice” by the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys at their annual meeting in Virginia Beach this month.
Del. Lacey Putney, I-Bedford, was recognized for his long service as a member of the General Assembly and chair of the House Appropriations Committee. In particular, he and Sen. Jill Vogel, R-Winchester, were honored for their work to boost pay for prosecutors and to partially restore the career prosecutors program.
Del. Donald Merricks, R-Chatham, received an award for work to tighten reporting requirements for scrap metal dealers. Putney and Merricks are not running for re-election.
Del. Jackson Miller, R-Manassas, was honored for legislation relating to the standard of appellate review when trial evidence is determined to be inadmissible.
Senior Assistant Attorney General Katherine Baldwin Burnett was recognized for her assistance to Virginia prosecutors, specifically her 13 years as director of the Capital Litigation Unit at the attorney general’s office. Burnett is leaving the office to become counsel to the Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission.
Pittsylvania County Commonwealth’s Attorney David Grimes was presented with the Robert F. Horan Award for his long service to the state and his service as VACA president in 2011-12. Grimes will retire this year after 30 years as a prosecutor.
New VACA officers for the 2013-14 year are:
- President: Raymond Morrogh of Fairfax County
- President-elect: Nancy Parr of Chesapeake
- Vice-president: LaBravia Jenkins of Fredericksburg
- Secretary/Treasurer: Eric Olsen of Stafford County
