Civil rights attorney Ken Tilsen died Sunday

Minnesota civil rights attorney Ken Tilsen died Sunday at 85.

Tilsen had a long and varied legal career in Minnesota. In 1950 after graduating from the University of Minnesota Law School he joined the Robins Davis and Lyons law firm (the firm later became Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi.

He then opened his own law firm in ST. Paul and practiced from 1966 to 1993. He then joined the Hamline University School of Law as an adjunct professor.

Tilsen made a name for himself representing the “little guy.” Among his many clients were people who refused to enter the Vietnam War draft, the American Indian Movement followers who took over the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1973 and protestors at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul.

His daughter Judith Tilsen, a Ramsey County Judge, said the clients he took on were a reflection of his belief system.

“He really believed that lawyers had a choice to do the right thing and not just defend anybody or prosecute anybody. He cared deeply about fairness and justice … it wasn’t just his work, it was his passion.”

A small graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Temple of Aaron in Roseville. A memorial service will be held later.
