4 Minnesota law firms among 50 best for women

Working Mother magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers compile an annual list of the 50 Best Law Firms for Women.

This year four Minnesota-based law firms are on it.

The list is based on the firm’s leadership in “promoting and retaining female talent” and recognizes legal workplaces with family-friendly policies and business development initiatives that are most successful in retaining women and advancing them into leadership roles.

The firms were evaluated based on family-friendly benefits and policies; flexibility; and leadership, compensation, advancement and retention of women.

Faegre Baker Daniels, Dorsey & Whitney, Fredrikson & Byron and Leonard, Street and Deinard were on this year’s list.

Leonard, Street and Deinard was recognized for:

• 43% of associates are women, up from 39% in 2009.

• Since January 2011, women comprise almost 60% of new attorney hires.

• Women now fill 31% of all leadership roles, including occupying two of the nine positions on the Board of Directors.

• Formal mentoring and motivational peer-group meetings to help accelerate progress.

• A new policy allows associates to speed up or slow down their partnership track to accommodate family needs.

• The firm’s women’s initiative shines a spotlight on the talent and contributions of the firm’s women attorneys and builds community.

Faegre Baker Daniels was recognized for:

• The corporate practice group recently hired a consultant to educate women on ways to better communicate their scheduling needs.

• Women are one quarter of all practice group leaders, executive committee and management board members.

• Women attorneys can take up to a year of job-guaranteed time off if they get pregnant, with 14 weeks fully paid; after they return, they can work flex their hours or reduce their schedules by as much as 33%.

• All attorneys are encouraged to advocate for women’s issues, which were the focus of 49% of the firm’s pro bono work and 60% of its community service in 2011.

Dorsey & Whitney was recognized for:

• 27% of the firm’s female partners, 58% of its female counsel and 9% of its female associates worked reduced hours.

• Attorneys may opt to adjust their weekly schedules, telecommute or work remotely.

• An on-site gym, child care subsidies and reimbursements, generous parental leave and up to $3,000 in adoption aid per child.

Fredrikson & Byron was recognized for:

• A formal policy that allows attorneys to reduce their hours by as much as 20% and still earn full health benefits.

• New work retreats and career coaching programs offer lessons in leadership, business and professional skills development.

• Women lead 37% of practice groups at the firm.
