Circuit courts using new cover sheets for civil actions

What’s your lawsuit about? It should be easier to tell with the new cover sheet published by the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Attorneys filing circuit court civil actions are asked to use the new cover sheet form available at the court’s website. The court modified the uniform cover sheet at the behest of the 2012 General Assembly, according to the Virginia State Bar.

Use of the new form will help actions be counted properly for the weighted caseload study being undertaken for the General Assembly to measure judicial workloads, said court executive secretary Karl Hade in the VSB news release.

The new cover sheet groups different filing types into subject matter categories, making it easier to locate the right check box for unusual legal actions.

For auto wreck personal injury cases, the category remains “motor vehicle tort,” but now you’ll find it under “General Civil – Tort,” rather than having to spot it on a long, alphabetical list.

The online cover sheet is a PDF document with fillable spaces that can be completed on a computer and then printed for submission to the court when the action is filed.
