Google Lawyer Finds a New Perch at Twitter

Nicole Wong, once described as a gatekeeper of the Internet, has left Google's legal department for a new nest. Ms. Wong, who had at been Google Inc. as a deputy general counsel since 2004, revealed in a tweet (of course) that she was joining Twitter. Ms. Wong said she was excited to "#jointheflock." At Google, Ms. Wong played a role in deciding what the world saw on the Internet, according to this 2008 New York Times Magazine story.

Wong and her colleagues...decide what controversial material does and doesn’t appear on the local search engines that Google maintains in many countries in the world, as well as on Google.com. As a result, Wong and her colleagues arguably have more influence over the contours of online expression than anyone else on the planet.

Ms. Wong's title at Twitter will be legal director, and she'll report to Twitter general counsel Alex Macgillivray, a spokesman said. (He reported to Ms. Wong when both were at Google, but left the company in 2009 to take the top legal job at Twitter.) Ms. Wong, in another tweet, dispelled a tweet that she was joining Twitter as the head of the legal department. "no one could fill @amac's shoes," she wrote, referring to Mr. Macgillivray.
